Course Summary

Teachers and designers will want to take e-Designer if they desire to enhance skills in creating content that reflects best practice in instructional design and active learning theory. Participants will already have a course or shell in which to build online activities while working with a facilitator. The focus is on designing activities that require students to interact with content and community, utilizing technology in an appropriate fashion and making optimum use of the online environment. Participants will also gain expertise in the use of course content creation and management tools.

Audience

This course is intended for all educators who:

  • Have completed Level I of the Calgary Board of Education’s "Teaching and Learning Online" Certificate program
  • Plan to design content for online courses, communities of practice or for distributed learning initiatives to support classroom teaching
  • Already have an online course or shell
  • Want to develop strategies for effectively engaging students in online activities
  • Desire to master the use of content module tools
  • Need to develop expertise in locating and accessing resources, including learning objects available in emerging repositories

Learner Outcomes

  • Become an online student for seven weeks in an online course facilitated by one or more instructors
  • Work with other educators in examining key issues related to effective design of online activities
  • Participate in a variety of activities from the perspective of a student
  • Examine a cross-section of learning activities and strategies currently employed by online instructors and/or classroom instructors.
  • Design and implement a content module in your own course

Requirements

Skills

  • General knowledge of Windows, word processing and basic computer operations (e.g. saving files, creating folders etc.)
  • Basic Internet navigation

Prerequisites

Hardware & Software

  • While no special hardware or software is required, you may wish to check the Technical Requirements Document to ensure that you have everything you need.

Time

  • Optional 90 minute face to face orientation on first day of class
  • Plan on spending 4 to 5 hours per week over the 7-week duration of the course
