Online, instructor-facilitated, 35 hours over a designated seven-week period. Optional 90-minute face-to-face orientation on first day of class.

Course Summary

This is a course for teachers or content developers who are interested in gaining an overview of multimedia options available to them for enhancing online courses. Participants will work offline to create multimedia files, then use the shared web space in the course to display uploaded web content. A facilitator will guide and evaluate course work over a 7 week period of time. The focus is on giving examples of various types of media with descriptors of how each can be created, creating media objects dependent on the software available to the participant, and understanding appropriateness and usefulness of multimedia in enhancing teaching and learning.

Audience

This course is intended for all educators who:

  • Have completed Level I and Level II of the Calgary Board of Education’s "Teaching and Learning Online" Certificate program
  • Want to gain an overview of multimedia formats available for enhancing web-based content
  • Designing multimedia content that will engage learners
  • Maximizing the online learning environment through the use of a variety of multimedia tools

Learner Outcomes

  • Become an online student for seven weeks in an online course facilitated by an experienced instructor
  • Work with other educators in examining key issues related to effective use of multimedia
  • Participate in a variety of activities from the perspective of a student
  • Examine a cross-section of existing online learning activities and strategies that incorporate multimedia
  • Construct 3 different multimedia segments

Requirements

Skills

  • General knowledge of Windows, word processing and basic computer operations (e.g. saving files, creating folders etc.)
  • Basic Internet navigation
  • Note: This course requires a significant amount of learner autonomy. Participants should be confident users of technology.

Prerequisites

Hardware & Software

While no special hardware or software is required, you may wish to check the Technical Requirements Document to ensure that you have everything you need.

Time

  • Optional 90 minute face to face orientation on first day of class
  • Plan on spending at least 4 to 5 hours per week over the 7-week duration of the course depending on the technical skill level of the participants.
