Course Summary

e-Valuator is for teachers who desire to gain expertise in creating effective assessment activities for online courses. Participants will already have a course or a shell in which they can build quizzes, assignments and self-assessment activities. At the same time, they will work from the perspective of the student in e-Valuator over a 7-week period of time. The focus is on designing assessment that actively engages learners, exploring a range of formative and summative assessment strategies, and increasing motivation through meaningful feedback. Use of Learning Management System assessment tools and other self-assessment software will be included.

Audience

This course is intended for all educators who are interested in:

  • Exploring innovative assessment strategies, both for classroom and online learners
  • Designing assessment that will actively engage learners
  • Maximizing the online environment to provide timely and meaningful feedback
  • Integrating assessment with instruction

Learner Outcomes

  • Become an online student for seven weeks in an online course facilitated by one or more instructors
  • Work with other educators in examining key issues related to effective assessment, including the unique opportunities inherent in the online environment
  • Participate in a variety of assessment activities from the perspective of a student
  • Examine a cross-section of online assessment strategies currently employed by online instructors
  • Design and implement a variety of assessment activities in your own course

Requirements

Skills

  • General knowledge of Windows, word processing and basic computer operations (e.g. saving files, creating folders etc.)
  • Basic Internet navigation

Prerequisites

Hardware & Software

  • While no special hardware or software is required, you may wish to check the Technical Requirements Document to ensure that you have everything you need.

Time

  • Optional 90 minute face to face orientation on first day of class
  • Plan on spending 4 to 5 hours per week over the 7-week duration of the course
