Course Summary

Are you interested in learning more about gifted students and their learning? Would you like a better understanding of how to provide differentiated learning instruction and assessment strategies? This course will explore the developmental stages of a child who has been characterized as gifted. It will help you to establish a strong understanding of the nature of giftedness and help you develop the skill sets and obtain resources you will need to ensure best practice in the classroom!

Audience

This course is intended for:

  • Elementary, junior high and senior high teachers, teacher-assistants, and administrators.
  • Educators who wish to use the activities embedded with this e-PD course with their own groups of students.

Learner Outcomes

Participants in this course should gain

  • an understanding of the characteristics and definition of giftedness
  • an understanding of the developmental issues of students who have been labeled as gifted
  • an ability to provide differentiated instruction in the learning environment
  • an understanding of various assessment strategies
  • the ability to apply instructional modifications and adaptations
  • resources for using in their work with gifted students

Requirements

Skills

  • General knowledge of Windows, word processing and basic computer operations (e.g. saving files, creating folders etc.)
  • Basic Internet navigation

  • While no special hardware or software is required, you may wish to check the Technical Requirements Document to ensure that you have everything you need.

Time

  • Optional 90 minute face to face orientation on first day of class
  • Plan on spending 4 to 5 hours per week over the 8-week duration of the course
