Teaching and Learning Online is an introduction to the realities of teaching and learning in a technological age. The Read and Write Web will have a profound impact on the classroom. Participants in this course will learn about new ways to connect, communicate, collaborate and create.
Online, instructor-facilitated, 25 hours over a designated five-week period. It is recommended that participants attend Elluminate session at the beginning of the course. You will have an opportunity to ask questions, communicate with your facilitator, meet and choose the groups you will be collaborating with throughout the next five weeks.
Course Summary

Teaching and Learning Online is the introductory course in which participants become students of distributed learning for five weeks in an online course facilitated by certificated teachers. Assignments range from an online scavenger hunt, individual and collaborative discussion postings, surveys and quizzes. Gain insight into the challenges and opportunities of being a virtual student. Consider the implications for your personal practice. By identifying strategies for building an engaging and interactive virtual classroom participants come to see the range of learning options that support a dynamic learning community.

This course is intended for all educators and others who are interested in:
- The pedagogical considerations of a virtual classroom
- Working in a distributed learning environment
- Investigating current initiatives that educational technologies can offer teaching and learning
- Experiencing distributed learning in a facilitated environment
Learner Outcomes
Plan a learning path over a five-week period, acknowledging the needs and requirements of other members of assigned group. As part of this learning experience, participants will:
- Explore working at your own pace, just-in-time learning
- Discover a variety of strategies to learn collaboratively with participants.
- Discover a variety of strategies to communicate with participants and your facilitator
- Experience the challenges and opportunities that are part of being an online student
Requirements
Skills
- General knowledge of Windows or Apple platform, word processing and basic computer operations (e.g. saving files, creating folders etc.)
- Basic Internet navigation
Hardware & Software
- A computer and an Internet connection
- While no special hardware or software is required, you may wish to check the Technical Requirements Document to ensure that you have everything you need.
Time
- Recommended 90 minute face to face orientation on first day of class.
- There will be an Elluminate session in this course.
- Plan on spending 4 to 5 hours per week over the 5-week duration of the course.
