Traditional Learning Centre

Online, instructor-facilitated, 40 hours over a designated eight-week period. This course normally begins with a full-day face2face meeting for those able to attend.

Note: Traditional Learning Centre is mandatory for those teachers interested in teaching in a Traditional Learning school.

Traditional Learning Centre is a online course facilitated by an instructor which explores the philosophy, pedagogy and organizational structure of a traditional learning school. This course explores the Traditional Learning Centre’s use of teacher-directed instruction and character education to foster reflective thinking, continuous learning and responsible citizenship.The program is a celebration of cultural diversity and commonly held values..

This course is intended for all educators who are interested in:

  • Teaching in a Traditional Learning school
  • Interested in the approach and pedagogy

Learner Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, participants will:

  • Understand what is meant by direct instruction.
  • Have reflected on the purpose and means of teaching character education.
  • Understand what is expected of and offered to students in a Traditional Learning Centre school
  • Understand what is expected from and offered to teachers in a Traditional Learning school.
  • Have participated with colleagues in building a community of teachers interested in the Traditional Learning Centre approach.
  • Have experienced being an online student

Requirements

Skills

  • General knowledge of Windows, word processing and basic computer operations (e.g. saving files, creating folders etc.)
  • Basic Internet navigation

Hardware & Software

  • While no special hardware or software is required, you may wish to check the Technical Requirements Document to ensure that you have everything you need.

Time

  • Face to face orientation on first day of class (Calgary based teachers)
  • Plan on spending 4 to 5 hours per week over the 8-week duration of the course
