Join us this year for a series of webinars. These are short one hour learning opportunities offered through Elluminate. Webinars will be led by CBE specialists in distributed learning and curriculum and will also profile exciting developments across the Calgary Board of Education.

To participate in a webinar, the following is required:

  1. Access to the Internet
  2. A headset (complete with microphone)
Professional women with headset

Links to the session will be sent out just prior to the start of the webinar. It is recommended that participants join the session a few minutes before the start time in order to test the audio.

Teens and Risk-Taking: Challenges and Opportunities

Teens are faced with making decisions about many new kinds of risk. Choices about drugs, alcohol, relationships and sexuality can be life changing. Research shows that brain development continues until the mid 20s with the pleasure centre of the brain developing before the judgment centre. That’s why teens often don’t recognize the risk in the things they do or think about the bad things that can happen. Learn tips and tools to allow teens enough risk to grow yet manage risk so they are safe.

Exploring Sexuality and Disability

Comprehensive sexuality education is a basic right for everyone. Vulnerable populations often face barriers to their sexual health because they do not have the same opportunities for learning and access to programs. Children and youth living with disabilities (physical/developmental) may be less knowledgeable and informed about sexual health and sexuality because of limited learning opportunities. Learn about resources and strategies to support youth in learning skills to celebrate their sexuality, developing healthy friendships and maintaining safe intimate relationships.

Substance Use and Sexual Decision-Making

Making decisions about sex can be difficult for youth as they weigh all the consequences and responsibilities of being sexually active. When youth use alcohol or drugs they are more likely to make decisions they regret, less likely to practice safe sex, and more at risk of sexual assault. Learn how risk and protective factors within the school context can impact students and how you can support healthy decision-making.

Understanding Sexual Behaviour in Children

Healthy sexual development in children is accompanied by curiosity and play that is developmentally and age appropriate. Children require information and knowledge about sexuality that is practical and reassuring. How do you know when a behaviour your student is displaying is a problematic sexual behaviour? Teachers need to know how to recognize and manage normal sexual behaviours and deal with them in a positive way.  Learn how to identify sexual behaviours that are problematic, how to manage them and when to refer students and families to professionals.
