When using D2L, a window pops up that says 'Error: No Login'? »

No Login Errors may be caused by several things. If logging back into D2L does not solve this issue then try closing all browser windows and try again.

How do I access instructions for using D2L? »

If you are a student your instructor should be able to offer you basic assistance, each instructor has the ability to tailor the course to their needs and some may use different features than others. Throughout D2L's interface you will see brief instructions on how to use some of the basic tools (such as discussion groups) and in some areas you will be able to mouse over a tool or icon to get brief instructions for that tool/icon. Within your course you may also see a link to the "D2L Reference Guide" which will also be helpful.

Why can't I open or download files from my D2L course? Why can't I open a file? »

Below are four of the most common reasons why this occurs with the Windows operating system:

1. When I click on a file it opens in my browser, but I do not have an option to download/save.

Originally the File Download dialogue box should come up with a Open, Save and Cancel button. There is also a check box that is selected by default to "Always ask before opening this type of file." If this check box is unchecked the dialogue box no longer opens when you click on a file. To reset this in Windows:

  • Open My Computer
  • Drop down the Tools menu and click on Folder Options (or go to "Control Panel" and open "Folder Options")
  • Click the File Types tab and scroll down the list of file types until you come to the appropriate file type extension (for instance, if this was a Word document you would look for DOC)
  • Click the file extension and then click the Advanced button
  • Reset the File Download dialogue box original settings by checking the Confirm open after download checkbox
2. When I try to save a file it opens a "Open With" dialogue box.

This is because you do not have the software needed to save this file. For instance, if you do not have Microsoft Power Point installed on your computer you will not be able to save a .ppt (Power Point) file on your computer. Some software offers free 'reader' downloads (such as Adobe, Word, Power Point), if not you will have to purchase the appropriate software and install it on your computer if you wish to save this file.

3. When I click on a file to open it nothing happens.

You may have a pop-up blocker installed on your computer, if you are using Internet Explorer 6.0.2, SP2 web browser it comes with a pop-up blocker. Most pop-up blockers block any window you attempt to open from a link. To override this hold down the Ctrl button while you click on the link. You can also adjust your blocker settings (Tools menu). Or, look below the web browser address bar, if you see a yellow bar that says " To help protect your security...", close this bar by clicking on the black X in the upper right hand corner of the yellow bar. To permanently shut this setting off:

4. When I right click, save as (save target as), I get an error message and it will not let me download the file.

Links within a D2L course are java quick links and are not a link to the actual file. Instead of using the right click, save as, left click on the link (if the File Download window doesn't open when you left click then see #1 above).

How do I sort discussion postings? »

Discussion postings can be sorted by Subject, Author (Posted By) and Date. To sort by anyone of these headings you must choose Unthreaded, All Messages, Unread Only or Flagged Only. If you are viewing your messages using the Threaded view, you cannot sort them. Once you have chosen a view that allows sorting, the category names (Subject, Posted By and Date) become active links. Clicking on the name will sort by that category. The sorting category is indicated by a small black triangle/arrow. You can reverse the order of the sort by clicking on the category name a second time. This will also reverse the black triangle/arrow.

How do I take a quiz? »

To take a quiz go to the appropriate course and then click on the quiz link in the Navigation bar. If your instructor has any quizzes for you to take they will be listed on this page. Click on the appropriate Quiz name to begin taking the Quiz. If no quizzes are listed please contact your instructor to verify the quiz start date.

If you are attempting to open the quiz by clicking on a link in the course Content and instead of the quiz opening you receive an HTML 400 or 500 error (Not Authorized Error, Internal Server Error) then try to access the quiz from the Quiz link on the Navigation bar instead. This will occur if there is a problem with the course Content link.

While taking the quiz it is recommended that you save often so you won't lose any answered questions should you get disconnected.

The instructor changes some course content yet I don't see any changes, what is wrong? »

Use the Clear Temporary Internet Files tutorials to solve this problem. There is a Netscape and Internet Explorer version of this template.

The text is too small or too large. How do I change it? »

At your organization's home page there should be a box with the title "Welcome." This is generally along the left hand side of the page but can be moved by the institution. In this box there is a link called "My Preferences". Click on the "My Preferences" link where you will find a number of tabs. Click on the General tab if it isn't already in front. Here you can change both the type face and font size used in many (but not all) areas of D2L. Choose your desired type face and font size from the drop down menus and click the Save button.

Click the Home button to return to your organization's home page.

Are there any known issues between AOL and D2L? »

AOL's browser is not supported by D2L and can be inconsistent if you are using it with D2L. After connecting to the Internet through AOL, open a supported browser and then log into D2L.
